This weeks interview was with Deb from TakeHeartCanada!

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A. I am a home daycare provider and mom of two amazing girls, in love with all of my life's blessings. I have had a lifelong passion for creating and crafting that I come by naturally as I was raised with love by knitters, sewers and crafters who passed on their love of creating things for themselves and others. I am forever grateful and inspired by their passion. 
Q. Tell us more about your shop and the kinds of things that you sell? 
A. I sell a variety of items made from felt roving including wool dryer balls, hand felted comfort hearts, teapot trivets and DIY kits for felt ball creations. I also make metal free earrings which are the perfect solution for sensitive little ears that long to wear cute fashionable earrings. The clear slip on style or plastic post style are both light and gentle for little ones and are non-allergenic. The slip on style slip easily over the earlobe and kids say they can't even feel that they are wearing earrings unlike most metal clip on style earrings that pinch and feel heavy. 

Q. What made you first start selling on Etsy?
A. Etsy is the place to sell handmade items to a world wide marketplace. I was often asked at shows where my items could be purchased and it was the easiest way to allow my customers to purchase my items online. I've been a long time Etsy shopper and it was an exciting day when I opened my own store!

Q. What was the first thing that you sold? 
A. My first sale on Etsy was 3 sets of plastic post earrings. It was the best feeling knowing that someone else had a use for what I was creating. 

Q. Your earrings are so adorable! What is your favourite one to create? 
A. It is honestly too difficult for me to pick just one. I will create a new set of earrings and gush over my new favorite until I create my next one. I was telling my husband just the other day that I honestly love the products that I make. I get great satisfaction out of creating the products that others will enjoy. Right now my new favorites are definitely anything that reminds me of spring; bright colours, flowers and butterflies! 

Q. Do you have a favourite time of day that you prefer to do your creative work? 
A. I love to create at night when my girls are asleep and I have me time. Me time is my creative time. My girls wake up in the morning and are always excited to see what I made the night before.

Share the Love Wednesdays: moxnme

This weeks interview was with Michelle Slivinsky from moxnme!  Her shop features some pretty stunning stained glass.  Why don't you head on over and check it out?

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Michelle Slivinsky and I am a stained glass artist. I graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree majoring in Oil painting and sculpture but my current passion is Stained Glass and its endless possibilities. I love the challenge it gives me, it teaches me patience and lets me explore the craft outside of the norm. Most people see stained glass in a church or something that “grandma” created. I want them to see the diversity of this art form and realize there are no rules. I create items using traditional methods in a non-traditional way to bring stained glass into a modern "fun" art form. I still paint but I have a hard time “letting go” and tend to display my paintings in my own home or family members.

How long have you been doing stained glass?
I’ve been creating stained glass for about 8 years now. Once I made my first cut in a piece of glass I was hooked and have never looked back!

What made you first start making stained glass?
I was influenced in the art of stained glass from my mother. I remember being young and watching her create such beautiful works of art. I always dreamed of learning but stained glass needs a lot of room and has a lot of upfront costs. But, once I had the financial means to support the craft I jumped in head first and have never looked back. I also learned that in order for me to improve and perfect my technique, I had to start selling what I was creating.


I love your butterflies! What is your favourite stained glass piece that you've ever done?
I would have to say my favourite piece that I’ve made was for an injured soldier who commissioned me to create a window of his service dog named Samee. I think it was the entire process that made this piece my favourite getting to know this brave soldier and his beloved “sidekick” who saved his life.

Do you have a favourite time of day that you prefer to create?
Unfortunately I am not a morning person and as such it takes me a bit to get motivated but once I enter my studio I lose track of time. Stained Glass is a craft that needs you to be alert there are so many “hazards” like glass, soldering iron, chemicals etc that if you’re not careful you can harm yourself.

What made you first decide to start selling on Etsy?
I started selling on Etsy because I love the feel of the site and the creativity of all the artists and crafters within it. I love how “handmade” was being recognized as something to be proud of and I also loved the ability to participate at such a low cost without any commitment. Stained glass is an expensive art form and as such I don’t have a vast array of pre-made items because most of my projects are custom. 

What was the first piece that you sold? 
The first piece I sold on Etsy was a stained glass screenbug. They are adorable glass bugs that simply slide into your patio or window screen and help stop people or animals from walking through.

This weeks interview is with Lyenne Dunlop from Krysta Marie Designs!  

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

A. I am a full-time, self-employed Jewellery Artisan. I was blessed with an incredible opportunity to work from home, which has allowed me to watch my children grow into the wonderful people they are becoming, and to provide a good life for the two of them and myself. I love to read, write, design jewellery and other artsy type things. I am a bead hoarder by nature. I fully believe that coffee is an essential part of life. And, I absolutely could not get through life without the few close friends that I have.

Q. How long have you been making jewelry? Describe the first piece you ever made.

A. I have been making jewelry since I was 12. I started with seed beads and fishing line. My very first piece was the ever popular beaded daisy chain. I made mine using embroidery floss and these really gorgeous rainbow colored glass beads. I can remember being really excited when I finally got it and the pattern just came together.

Q. What is your inspiration?

A. I’m very fortunate as I can draw inspiration from almost anywhere. My biggest sources come from the paint aisle at hardware store and when I'm window shopping at the mall – I just LOVE the color schemes used in store front displays.

Q. I love your chainmaille pendants! Which piece is your favourite and why?

A. Thank you so much! They were a lot of fun to create! My favourite piece would have to be the Romanov Earrings. They look like small, elegant birds’ nests.

Q. What time of day do you do most of your creating?

A. I am a night owl. Most of my creating happens between 1 am and 4 am. That’s when all my brilliant ideas occur. All of the business-y stuff gets done during the day when the kids are at school.

Q. What made you start selling on Etsy?

A. I started selling on Etsy as a way to supplement my income. I had been selling full time on eBay for years, but needed an avenue that was more geared towards handcrafted items and supplies. A friend actually mentioned Etsy to me and I'm really glad she did. I've been selling on Etsy for about three and half years now.
Q. What was the first item that you sold?

A. The very first item I sold was a Beaded Watch, using Swarovski Crystals and Mother of Pearl shell beads, in bright summery colours.

Q. Do you have a work space that you do your work at?

A. I have a designated work space in my bedroom for the time being. I’m looking at studio space for the fall. I’m really looking forward to separating home & work.

Q. What is the most challenging piece of jewelry you've ever worked on?

A. The most challenging piece I have ever created was a Dragonscale Posture Collar. It contained over 2000 jump rings. It took over 30 hours to complete and I had to take it apart three separate times for it to finally weave properly.

Q. Is there anything else that you want people to know about you or your shop?

A. Krysta Marie Designs is my passion; it’s my life’s blood. Other than my children, it’s the reason I look forward to getting out of bed every day. I am truly grateful for the opportunity that I have to do what I love and earn a living from it. I create every single piece by hand, and my care and great attention to detail definitely shows through all of my work. Each piece is truly a labour of love; blood sweat and tears goes into quite a few of my pieces!

This week I had the pleasure to interview Cathy Brooks from Creative Wedding Invitations!  

Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A. I am a designer and artist. I make hand made wedding invitations made to order to the couple's specifications. I also work as an educational assistant and own a health and wellness business.
I have been married for 34 years and have 2 grown daughters.

How long have you been making wedding invitations? 
A. I have been making wedding invitations for about a year. I have been making greeting cards for years but I decided to make a business out of my hobby.

What is your inspiration?
A. The couple sends me examples of what they like and I try to use their ideas to make something unique to them. I also look at other sites like Pinterest and Etsy for creative ideas.


Which invitation is your favourite and why?
A. I really enjoy making same-sex wedding invitations because there aren't many for gay couples to choose from so I can really be creative. 
Q. What time of day do you do most of your creating?
A. I work at a high school during the day and work on my invitations in my studio on weekends and evenings. I am fortunate to have summers off so I work then too.

Q. What made you start selling on Etsy?
A. I didn't know where to start selling my greeting cards so a friend suggested Etsy. I love the social part of Etsy and opened up a vintage shop too.

Q. Do you have a work space that you do your work at?
A. I have a large studio in the basement of my house. My husband put some shelving, a long table and good lighting for me.

A. Couples appreciate that each invitation is laser printed and hand-stamped one at a time by me. They also like that although the process takes a couple of months, my deadlines are much more flexible than some larger companies.

This weeks interview is with Gianna Seca from Gems by Gia.  Gianna does fundraising for the Heart & Stroke foundation and SickKids Hospital in Toronto.  

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Gianna and I am a jewelry designer and maker from Toronto, Canada.

How long have you been making jewelry?
I began in 2009.  I did private and house parties but I got quite ill and had to stop – so I began to sell on Etsy.com. I had 3 different names since 2011.

What made you decide to start selling your jewelry as fundraising? 
My friend’s son had a friend who has Lymphoblastic Lymphoma and other friends’ children were also being treated at the SickKids Hospital here in Toronto. I just had to raise money for this worthy cause- so I began selling dedicated bracelets on-line and in stores. I raised $2000 that went to the fund since 2013.
 
Which causes does your shop help support?
This year my mother had a severe stroke- she survived and I needed to start raising money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada as well as SickKids. I will also be adding the Ronald McDonald House and other ones in the future.

Which design is your favourite?
That’s easy- the LOVE Wild Heart- it is my mom’s favourite as well.

What time of day do you do most of your creating?
I create when the creative juices flow – I have done it at 2 am, at 6 am …lol. It becomes I have to see where this is going kind of thing.

What was the first item that you sold?
I will never forget. Two Sterling Silver ( I only work in Sterling Silver) block bead name necklaces in black leather for 2 little girls. I gave their father 50% off. I am not much of a business person. 

Do you have a work space that you do your work at?
My tiny apartment or at my parent’s home.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hmm ok... let’s see... I grew up in California but married a Canadian, so I packed up my two cats and now live in Ontario. I've done everything from running a comic book shop to working in TV and radio, both on air and off. I have worked in senior care, child care, and pet care. I'm a gamer girl and a proud geek. I am now the owner of Pirate Kat's Booty, my jewelry shop. I make hand crafted jewelry for men, women, kids and pets. I am also branching out into key chains, book marks, zipper pulls, and charms for cellphones, tablets, and readers.

How long have you been making jewelry?

Pretty much all my life. I started stringing beads when I was a kid, then made macramé style jewelry when I was in Girl Scouts. I did some wire work in art classes in high school. Now I'm doing beadwork jewelry and branching into other styles.

I love the Icy Brilliance! Which design is your favourite?

Wow, tough one. I'd say this week it is Pacific Passion. If you ask me again next week it will probably be something else. The jewelry I make reflects my mood, so every day something else is going to be my “favourite.”

What time of day do you do most of your creating?

Most of my creating is done in the evenings, when I can relax and just enjoy what I do.

What made you start selling on Etsy?

I started making things as gifts for friends and family. After about the 20th person said “You need to open an Etsy shop! Your work is beautiful!” I finally checked it out and opened my shop. Good thing too... I hadn't realized just how much jewelry I had made just in my spare time.

What was the first item that you sold?

First item I sold was a Southwest style charm bracelet made with polished stone beads and silver stars with western themed charms.

Do you have a work space that you do your work at?
I used to say I did a little beading in my Home office. Now when I look around my “office” and see more beads than office supplies.

I am a firm supporter of small business and buying hand made. Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

A. My name is Karina Clark and my shop is Cottage Shades. I make quality handcrafted lamps, lampshades, and pillows in Newmarket, Ontario. 

Q. Can you describe cottage style decorating and how you started incorporating it into your designs?

A. I have always had a keen interest in decorating, with a particular fondness for “Cottage Style,” where the English countryside blooms in beautiful floral patterns, overstuffed chairs, and casual elegance—and,most often, pretty lamps adorned with lovely fabric lampshades!  Beyond aesthetic appeal and practicality, Cottage Style boasts diversity: it isn't bound to any specific setting, and this flexibility allows it to be adopted by any home, anywhere. Cottage Style’s practical roots are often overlooked in lieu of its more romantic qualities—the floral prints, the pastel palettes, the painted furniture.

Q. How long have you been making home decor items?

A. Several years ago my husband and I purchased a small 1950’s bungalow in a beautiful mature area of our great Town. While undergoing extensive renovations, I had some furniture reupholstered, and with the leftover fabric, I had a lampshade recovered. Instantly I knew I wanted to learn how! For me, switching a plain white shade for one with beautiful fabric on it just warms the room, gives it personality. After my son was born, I left my full-time job and Cottage Shades was formed. This is my sixth year in business. Much of my business comes through custom work, and I also love creating my own designs, which reflect my love of Cottage Style.

Q. I love the Ralph Lauren 12" x 18" Muskoka pillows.  Which design is your favourite?

A. My Mason jar lamps are my original design, and the first thing I began selling. They are especially unique when topped with a Muskoka or Georgian Bay lampshade, made with fabric designed by my sister-in-law and recognized throughout Ontario’s Cottage Country. I make them in different sizes and my clients love to fill them with their own personal collections: shells, rocks, pine cones...

Q. What time of day do you do most of your creating?

A. I design and have a professional wood turner make, and my unique paint colors which I mix myself. I am always creating; lovely things in our day-to-day lives inspire my creativity even when I’m not in my studio. This past year, I began making decorative pillows to complement or coordinate with my lampshades. Each one of my pillows, as with my lampshades, is a one-of-a-kind creation.

There is nothing easier or more emotionally satisfying than creating the Cottage Style look; there is nothing pretentious about it, rather, it is the embodiment of everything casual, comfortable, calm, and soothing. After all, your physical environment is an integral part to your happiness.

Q. Do you have a work space that you do your work at?

A. When I’m not being a wife or mother, I am in my studio. One of the other perks of working from home is having time for my other passion, which is triathlon. I am honoured to have represented Canada at the World Championships four times!

Q. I see from your Etsy shop that you have an upcoming show on April 12th! Can you tell us a little bit more about it?

I will be at the Made By Hand Show on April 12^th, at the International Centre in Toronto. Etsy is a wonderful tool for getting exposure and meeting people that share the same passions and style. This year I will also be a guest vendor at the Rosseau Market.
